Older autoflower strains earned a poor reputation for tiny plants and weak effects, largely because early ruderalis crosses were rough. Breeders have since backcrossed them many times with strong photoperiod lines, and plenty of current autos are hard to tell apart from their parents. The autoflower descriptions at https://budweedseeds.com often mention which photoperiod strain was used, which I find a useful hint about quality. Some are still less consistent than photoperiods, so an occasional disappointing plant is normal.
