I’m at my wit's end with Bureau of Accounts Control. They’re calling me nonstop about a debt I think is really old. The collector on the phone keeps threatening to sue me and garnish my wages if I don’t pay immediately. It’s been terrifying, and it’s affecting my sleep and work.

But after doing some research, I’m learning that if a debt is past the statute of limitations, they often can't actually sue you. Under the 2021 CFPB rules, they're supposed to disclose if a debt is "time-barred," and that paying it could restart the clock. They definitely did not tell me that.

I found a resource that explains exactly what constitutes harassment (like the 7 calls in 7 days rule) and breaks down your rights with these time-barred debts. It also has a free case review link if you want to talk to a lawyer who specializes in this.

Here's the link in case it helps anyone else: End Bureau of Accounts Control Debt Collection Harassment

Has anyone else here been threatened with a lawsuit by them over an old debt? What ended up happening?
