Erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE) are two different sexual health problems that men can have. They affect different parts of sexual performance.

If you can't get or keep an erection long enough for a good sexual performance, you have erectile dysfunction. There are many things that can lead to it, such as physical problems like heart disease, diabetes, or hormonal issues, as well as mental problems like stress, worry, or sadness. Men of all ages can have ED, and the number of men who have it rises with age. Oral medicines (like sildenafil and tadalafil), vacuum erection devices, penile implants, lifestyle changes, and therapy are all ways to treat ED.

Ejaculation that happens right after or even before sexual entry, often with little or no sexual excitement and before the person wants to ejaculate is called premature ejaculation. It can be lifelong, meaning it has been there since the start of sexual behavior, or acquired, meaning it happened after a time of normal sexual function. PE can be caused by both mental and physical things. Mental things include performance worry, relationship problems, or stress. Biological things include hormone imbalances or a penis that is too sensitive. PE happens more often in younger guys, but it can happen to anyone. Behavior methods (like the stop-start or squeeze technique), external anesthetics, mouth medicines (like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), and therapy are all ways to treat PE.

In short, both ED and PE cause problems with sexual performance, but ED is more about having trouble getting or keeping an erection, while PE is about having trouble controlling when you ejaculate. Each illness has its own reasons, danger factors, and ways of treating it.
